Communicating the outputs of our action on Bats and Climate Change

Climate change is affecting the distribution and abundance of bats and insect pest species.  These changes, and the interactions between them, are complex and have implications for farmers, policy makers and conservationists.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level) with excellent written communication skills to help us share the findings of our Cost Action with stakeholders via an online workshop, social media posts and a newsletter.  Applicants should be active on social media and have excellent written communication skills. Experience with organising online meetings would be an advantage.

The STSM will take place between April 2023 and June 2023.  Application deadline is the Friday 14th April 2023.

To apply, email a short CV (maximum 2 pages) and a short motivation paragraph explaining why you want to do this STSM and your relevant experience to: leonardo.ancillotto@unina.it

MODELLING SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL TRENDS IN BAT MORPHOLOGY

Many organisms show changes in body mass or appendage length in response to climate warming, due to increased metabolism and thermoregulatory properties of body mass and shape. Due to their biology, bats can be very sensitive to temperature changes and may respond by altering body mass and wing size and shape. This STSM will analyse these trends in bats using a time series of morphological traits (forearm length) of bats from across Europe. Additionally, the STMS will perform a spatial analysis that will assess the relationship between forearm length and temperature across environmental gradients in Europe.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level) with experience in statistical modelling (linear mixed-effects models) and proficiency in the use of R, particularly for performing spatial analysis.

The STSM will take place between April 2023 and June 2023.  Application deadline is the Friday 24th March 2023.

Updating of the Guidelines for Bat Monitoring in Europe.

Monitoring bats might seem easy for most bat researchers, but in order to implement long-term monitoring programmes there is the need to implement robust and systematic protocols at continental scale, using standardized methodologies and rigorous methods. In order to facilitate that, we are currently updating the Guidelines for Bat Monitoring in Europe (previsouly published in 2010).

We are seeking a candidate to work on the statistical approach and design a standardization summary showing how collected data should be analyzed.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level) with extensive experience in bat trapping and bat surveys using several methodologies and proficiency in English.
The STSM will take place between March 2023 and June 2023. Application deadline is the 10th March, 2023. To apply, email a short CV and a short motivation paragraph explaining why you want to do this STSM and your relevant experience to: leonardo.ancillotto@unina.it

Design an optimized European monitoring network to detect species range shifts in response to Climate Change.

Tracking species range shifts due to climate change requires sampling effort to be allocated to areas where such shifts are most likely to occur. On the other hand, to be effective and long-standing, monitoring locations should be accessible to people. This is especially relevant for monitoring networks that are mostly supported by volunteer effort, as engagement will be harder if people need to reach remote areas with low accessibility. This STSM will design an optimized monitoring network targeting areas where range shifts are likely to occur while also considering accessibility to those areas.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level) with extensive experience in GIS and proficiency in the use of R.

The STSM will take place between April 2023 and June 2023. Application deadline is the 10th March, 2023.

MAP MISMATCHES OF EUROPEAN BATS AND 8 PREY SPECIES,  BASED ON MODELS ALREADY PRODUCED BY THE COST ACTION.

Understanding the current and projected mismatches between bat and prey species distributions is critical to understanding the potential impacts of climate change on bat ecosystem service provision. The Action Management Committee therefore welcomes applications to support the scientific activities of Working Group 3 by producing maps to illustrate mismatches between the modelled distributions of European bats and 8 prey species.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level) with extensive species distribution modelling experience, who are proficient users of R.

The STSM will take place between late January 2023 and 30th April 2023.  Application deadline is the 25th January, 2022.

To apply, email a short CV (maximum 2 pages) and a short motivation paragraph explaining why you want to do this STSM and your relevant experience to: leonardo.ancillotto@unina.it

SCOPING REVIEW OF METHODS FOR MONETARY EVALUATION OF THE PREY SUPPRESSION BY BATS IN AGROECOSYSTEMS

The financial value of agricultural pest suppression by bats is currently an important data gap that hampers understanding of the ecosystem services provided by bats. The Action Management Committee therefore welcomes applications to support the scientific activities of Working Group 3 drafting a scoping review of the methodologies that could be applied to address this question.

We are looking for an early career researcher (Masters or PhD level), preferably with a background in agronomy and pests. A background in bat research would also be helpful.

The STSM will take place between late January 2023 and 30th April 2023.  Application deadline is the 25th January, 2022.
