Jaan is a senior research fellow working at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He was initially a plant ecologist, but from the outset his research topics covered topics of forest and grassland ecology, agricultural landscapes and ornamental parks, as well as various taxonomic and functional groups of species. He has also been active in the development of biological indicators for various ecosystems and co-created methodologies for national monitoring schemes. His research group works on quantification of landscape-scale processes of biodiversity and ecosystem services within and between ecosystems.
