Fiona is Professor of Environmental Biology at the University of Sussex and Chair of the UK’s Mammal Society. She recently led the review of the conservation status of mammals in Britain, and created the first IUCN Regional Red List for British mammals. Her research group works on landscape-scale conservation, using techniques ranging from circuit-theory modelling to population genetics. She is also interested in harnessing data collected by citizen scientists and ecological consultants. For example, she co-created the Ecobat webtool ecobat.org.uk, which enables users to compare bat activity at different sites; and designed the Mammal Mapper app, which facilitates effort-based recording of mammal observations by members of the public.
